The Family Learning Center in Menomonie has served as a community gathering space for over 50 years, and now members are seeking support to sustain its future.
The Center, located at 523 Cedar Ave E, is owned and operated by The Menomonie Area Homeschoolers, but the group has dwindled in numbers in recent years. “During COVID, things just kind of shifted,” explained member Jessica Fischer.
At the group's current size, the Homeschoolers can no longer maintain and operate the Center on their own. They are reaching out to the greater community for involvement and assistance. “You don’t have to be a homeschooler to be on the Board or use the building or help with upkeep,” said Fischer.
Andrea Gerasimo has rented the space to teach yoga for years, as has Xanthi Gerasimo, who teaches Karate. Their rents helped to keep the Family Learning Center going for as long as it has. The board hopes to continue to rent to them.
Renting the space to other groups or individuals would generate revenue, but the Family Learning Center needs more board members and volunteers in place to make that happen. Fischer said she and other members seek a “broadening of people who are able to contribute to the space’s future” who can “ensure that it stays a non-profit community space.”
The Family Learning Center is a former church and offers an ample, multi-purpose space. In addition to hosting homeschool classes, the building has been used for open mic nights, dancing, and theater productions.
Downstairs is a full working kitchen stocked with serveware, along with several tables and an electric fireplace.
There is a wheelchair ramp to the front door. While the main floor is considered wheelchair accessible, the lower level does have stairs. Outside is a fenced-in yard, a garage, and plenty of space for a garden.
