Many families in West Central Wisconsin struggle to pay for driver's education classes.

But now a new statewide grant program will help remove those financial barriers for income-eligible teens.

The grants pay for 30 hours of classroom, 6 hours of observation, and 6 hours of behind the wheel at an instructional program registered with the WI DMV. The state pays the grant money directly to the instructional program.

Eligibility Requirement: WI Driver Education Grant Program

Teens who meet the following requirements can apply for a Driver Education Grant:

  • Wisconsin resident

  • Between 14 and 19 years of age

  • Have not previously held a driver's license

  • Meet household income guidelines for federal Child Nutrition Programs, even if they don't participate in these programs

    • Students who receive free or reduced school lunches automatically qualify.

    • Teens who are homeschooled, attend an online school, participate in alternative education, or have graduated must meet the same income limits.

The Driver Education Grant Program was funded by $6 million earmarked in Governor Evers' 2023-2025 biennial budget. Grants will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis as long as funds are available.
